It's always amused me that people won't troll in real life if they perceive that there is a physical threat to their well-being, but life in the bit-bucket is almost like the freeway - they feel free to break the rules of civility and manners so long as they feel protected in their own private environment.

Personally as a large, aggressive looking male it has always amused me to watch the demeanor of a real life troll change when I joined the situation, hideous behavior is almost instantly subdued and civility ensues.  I view it as an interesting comment on the human condition.

Melons has an interesting take on the entire thing, in her opinion (as the mother of boys) too much boyness has been stripped away in our pursuit of political correctness.  Most boys are rough and tumble, letting them tumble and create a natural order for themselves and actually is stable (and possibly could be part of the cure for our current mass murder issue).
