While the quote comes from a typical "O" knucklehead, the sentiment is correct.  I personally know at least a dozen active duty soldiers who have spent the majority of the last ten years in combat zones.

Not sure what your point is here Em?

Hank Williams said "Thirteen Months and Fifteen Days" but for people who took incentives, or reupped, yeah there were people there three years: http://wiki.answers.com/Q/How_long_was_ … in_Vietnam

Still this is the longest continuous warfare in our nations history and while some of the things we did for the Kurds and the tribes in Al-Anbar worked out in the long run it's really had a serious negative impact on our troops.  We've chased off the best and the brightest and left far too many with permanent wounds (physical and mental); what have we gained from this - us as Americans?  What have we gained?

Please remember that in Vietnam they rotated people, not units; now you return area of operations when your unit returns.  Even more fun if you get orders to another unit that is about to rotate, you go with them even if you just got back a month ago.

My Dad did three tours on Fast boats in Vietnam, plus one on a destroyer (Based in the Philippines, but in and out of Vietnam on resupply missions). But he was stateside for around a month between each tour, so total time "in country" was probably less than three years, but only by a couple of weeks.

Long tours are the eventual outcome of an all-volunteer military and decreasing defense budgets.

Don't even get me started on defense budgets and the military-industrial complex.  We are spending money on some crazy shit.

There's precedent for starting a war on trumped-up evidence for economic gain and domestic political advantage, after all.
