Living in Thatcherite Britain was a certain kind of hell, I can think of no better fitting tribute than this:

I used to live not far from the 'end of the A303' as noted in that tune. I had left only a couple of years before all that went down.
As for Thatcher, well, let's just say I approve of her death.

The post-mortem Maggie Love Fest has been nauseating. Thank god for the Guardian.

Three days folks - everyone gets three days out of respect after death, after that you can sling all the shit you like and I'll join in.

To the living we owe respect, but to the dead we owe only the truth. Voltaire.
I dunno about that first part but fuck Maggie, it's party time.

Proper manners my friend, never forget your manners. Maggie did a few good things and her family deserves a few days grace before everyone piles on.

Meh. Atlas shrugs. That horse left the barn long before the train left the station.

Sorry Em, but Maggie was a public figure who destroyed the lives of countless people and I don't recall any effort on her part to recognize the dignity or worth of those whose lives were so negatively effected by her policies. Anyway, since when did High Street become a place where we worry about being nice to the formerly-powerful dead?

At the same time Maggie did revitalize a dying country she just went too fucking far; same thing as has happened here - the unions got too full of themselves and actually started negatively effecting the rest of the workers for their own gain. Balance must be reinstated at some point and it's always going to be at the very least extremely distasteful when the pendulum swings.
We face that now in California, the public employee unions are abusing the taxpayers - something will eventually happen and there will be an ugly accounting. A buddy of mine is a Union Rep and trainer for the Carpenters union here, he laments what has slowly occurred. Instead of being craftsmen's guilds the Unions have slowly become a welfare society and in some cases are worse than the corporations they were originally created to protect the workers from.
I'm in favor of unions (except for public employees - complete conflict of interest there) however balance must be restored at some point.

The distinction is always easy: Unions are fine, union shops are not. Any union that denies a person the right to negotiate their own labor is taking freedom from one person to put money in their own wallet. It's a shallow trade. The mighty American craftsman should be better than that.
Where it's really inbred is in the government unions. You have unions negotiating with "management", who were usually recently in the union, about pay and benefits with no controlling profit margin or bonus to regulate the negotiations. So why not just give the union the taxpayers money? It's not like the management will get paid less.

Why wouldn't a "privatized" funeral be awesome? I'm sure she still has plenty of rich friends to help pay the bills and if the proles didn't like her, fuck 'em, more top-shelf for me.

The part I like best is when the management is covered under the same contract they are negotiating with the union, oddly enough that never seems to work out well for us the tax payer.
And what gives someone the right to retire at 50 and suck off of the tax payer teat for the next 35 years of their life? Hey if you can't police or fight fires any longer you can be the parking ticket guy or drive a street sweeper or maybe a garbage truck. My mother is still working full time at 72 and I expect to also - these asswipes need to get back to work.

She revitalized the Home Counties, everywhere else suffered. The North and other parts of the UK have never, never recovered. She did more fucking harm to society then any one on this forum seems to realize. There are swaths of Britain that are Ghost Towns because of her callous handling of the economy and industry. Shit loads of people left, never to return, and others still live in poverty because of the Tory heavy handedness.

You really just need to watch that movie, posted above. It tells the story quite well. Maggie gutted so many industries... it was shameful. And as Dusty noted, many places have never recovered and likely never will.

Ah, the Halcyon days of Thatcher caught on film. When a young man need not feel ashamed of what he got. Or have a feeling at all.
The larger questions leave him unfazed: ''I'm not really worried about the country, actually. I'm worried about me.''
If there are serious problems festering somewhere beyond the privileged boundaries of these entrepreneurs, they dismiss them as agitations of the ''loony left.'' After all, the men reason, it is better for some people to have privilege than for none to have it. And if all else fails, one says, ''It would not take much for a military unit to take charge of the Government, to take charge of London.''

Their feckless toffs and nobs somehow put all our own hapless swells to shame.
Sadly, that brilliant, mega-hat NY Yacht Club link you found last year got scrubbed.

Whilst I strongly agree that the Capitalist and De-regulation wonks have gotten completely out of control, the issues facing our societies as to the "less than talented working classes" have been driven more by the inevitable advances of technology than anything else. We have slowly replaced the idiots with smart machines (or 3rd world workers as the case may be), the steady advance of technology has made this a fact. I've created and implemented technology in the past decade that enabled us to lay off traders who used to bring home 7 figure bonuses.
Where it ends I don't know, but Maggie wasn't completely to blame - why the fuck would a government own an airline in the first place? I personally think that core services like water, power, sewer and urban transport should be considered core social benefits and should never be privatized - but a fucking airline?
Oh how the pendulum swings...

If you've been a cop or firefighter from age 20 to age 50 (or fought in fucking Afghanistan or Iraq for the last decade)...I think you've earned it.
