Well the FTC hasn't seen a merger they didn't like in the last two decades - fair trade my ass.

A privately held formerly American company, owned by Chinese, in the midst of a growing global food crisis.

What could possibly go wrong here?

Funny story.  I was driving through Windsor a bit more than a year ago and saw a small Bombadier jet parked near their building.  Actually, it dwarfed the building.  Windsor is really close to Smithfield, and the gov't uses it for practice with their helicopters.  They have a nice runway, but I've never seen a jet at a little place like that. I wrote down the tail number and looked it up later.  It was owned by an accounting firm.  I thought at the time, that it was an investment lease, but who knows, could have been someone doing due diligence.

Hindsight, baby!  It's 20/20.

It's a good play.  All the major U.S. brewers sold out and now craft and home-brew (Thanks Mr. Carter) are going gang busters.  Meat, due to environmental/economic/social costs, will soon be grown in labs.

As an aside, in reference to the many Chinese I've dined with, fat appears to be almost orgasmic. As for the Virginia hams 'mericans love (a staple at every family gathering I ever attended) I'm inclined to think it was the salt.

Actually, as someone who has actually smoked hams as a young man (but I never inhaled), a combination of salt and sugar cure is actually the best ham you'll ever eat.
