After Officers Friendly deduced from my polite and submissive manners that I had been in the armed services which I happily affirmed and they then took two steps back and put their hands on their sidearms; well shit - this just doesn't surprise me anymore. The polite young officer who was hauling me in casually hanging his cap on his M16A2 still haunts me a bit.
