That was my first impression, especially after the Wired link above lasted less than 15 min on reddit, and the nytimes followed suit soon after with its own ignominious spike. Pre-internet history, though, is littered with balkanized also rans. Some other nation will launch it's own network protocols built better from the ground up - I'm betting China - and the center will not hold.

I tend to follow your line of thinking but then again let's not forget that the Internet was and remains a DARPA project. It does not pay to underestimate DARPA.
