News aggregators like high-street.org are the proverbial pigeons in the mine shaft. Our traffic volume has increased as more and more of them give up the ghost.
Too much money is crushing too few credible news stories, a classic case of 'demand-pull inflation'?
Reddit, Gawker, Fark, and Drudge all seem to betray the same yawning, "Who gives a fuck anymore?"
It'll surprise me if this not our last Christmas.
What do you think?

Oh, no, please don't let the Street die. It's the holiday season at the end of a hard, shitty year and nobody cares about anything but the (shithouse) weather right now. Things will return to "normal" soon!

I think our basic problem is that most of us who have been around since the Cruel Era of the late 90s are suffering from increasing emotional maturity. My Inner Vicious Asshole is becoming a less important part of my personality, so I'm feeling less imperative to vent the toxins it produces in a way that doesn't screw over my life in meatspace. Then there's the matter of some people, like Sofie, finding that increasing responsibilities at work keep them from playing at sites like this. I’ve become friends on Facebook with people whose Inner Vicious Assholes used to fight with my Inner Vicious Asshole. Knowing that I like their real life personalities makes it difficult to have epic battles with them here. Perhaps some of the people who drive our increased traffic need to start displaying their inner demons here.

I am here off and on all day if I am at home. Perhaps it is stress fatigue?
I used to enjoy reading comments on places like Drudge as their virulence was highly entertaining. I can go to my local news paper or tv station now days, and they top the good old days with the depth of crazy beyond belief. I can barely wade through them anymore, the hatred that pulses out of the web now days is pretty numbing.

I don't need the hatred, I'm here for the cool stuff -> pictures and movies and links to news articles about idiots. You can sit on CNN (or whatever) and hit F5 all day and nothing ever changes, it's like nothing is happening in the world. We all know that's bullshit, things are happening every where constantly and some of them are fucking hilarious.
Oh and also I like pretty redheads.
And melons, I like Melons.

There's no going back to the good ole days. Images are no longer disturbing anymore (except for those naked spit smelling ginger pics). Outside of the occasional meat spin website, we've seen it all, I think. On the news front, the state of Florida alone has vomited out so many "grandmother caught fingering corpse's butt hole" stories that we have grown tired of those too. Fnord burned through every funny "black people acting like a fool" video ever created in a matter of months so there's nothing left in that treasure chest. Thanks, fnord.
What do we do to get our jollies now? Argue God damn boring assed politics and look at those fucking gross as fuck naked red head pics. WTF?

Maybe nine months from now Big Cat and Willard will spawn a demon-Cruel site for the Inner Vicious Asshole Of The Ages to enjoy sneer at and torment. Until then, there is just no substitute for High Street.

Yes. Hilarious, frightening, enlightening, and useful. Cruelty has many faces but that's the one that brought me to this school yard. Bum a smoke? Left mine in the machine.

To add some data to the conversation, here are traffic statistics going back as far as we have history available. Note that a "request" is any hit on the site, whether it's for an individual image, file, thread, etc. A "request for page" only includes hits to threads, forum listings, etc. (anything ending in .php, .html, or for a directory) and is a better indicator of how many people are actually reading the site.
Note that hits (for pages or otherwise) by robots are not excluded, so each hit does not necessarily represent a human viewing something.
Analysed requests from Thu-18-Dec-2008 23:21 to Sun-08-Dec-2013 03:32 (1815.17 days).

It seems to me that the reasons why High Street would shut down would be the same as for Cruel: legal threats, psycho threats, and lack of interest by management.
Which of these are you anticipating?

I can't say I visit often, and it might be because I interact with a lot of HS'ers and ex Cruellers on Facebook regularly. Also, my inner asshole seems to have matured as well. And I feel like I've seen everything shocking or obnoxious on the internet - or at least some variety of it.
Plus with my new clearance at work, visiting this site would not be very smart on a government computer.
Still miss you all (well some of you).

None of the above. News accounts were and remain our primary fuel and the well is running dry. Newsrooms are hobbled by skeleton staffs of the enfeebled, those lacking the chops to find employment elsewhere. Their sources don't trust them, and their readers yawn looking elsewhere while ad revenues race to the bottom. Its untenable. Worse, it's fucking boring.
There wasn't much hope before our massive spy apparatus was exposed but at least we didn't know it was hopeless. Changes things, that knowledge and not in a good way.

Long time listener, first time caller. I've never registered because, frankly, I was never sure I'd fit in. I'm only signing in now because of choad's question.
I've been watching you guys on a nearly daily basis since the Cruel days. I've seen the Horse insanity, Fnord's without-a-trace-of-irony bigotry, Rogers' pope-squatting, Bigcat's recent shit fit decision to leave, and many others I can't remember at the moment. You're like old friends, and, for whatever it's worth, I'd miss the hell out of you guys.

Been out of the country on hiatus so missed this thread.
For me, This is a place to find old friends even though I know none of you IRL (at least that I know of). I know I can find another home somewhere on the web but I am not interested in that. As some have said and I agree, I no longer require the cruelty which was a needed part of my day years ago. As I have mellowed, so have we as a group (my opinion), and that also has been a good thing. I think if this had maintained the cruel aspect of past years, I probably would have moved on.
If High-Street dies, it will be mourned by me and I am sure others. I may not get to drop in as much as I would like, but I appreciate all the time I do get to spend with the folks here regardless. For whatever reason, I seem to find this a good fit. Thanks for that. (/corny reality)
