I don't actually hate them, but this is an example of why they are not held in high regard. The teachers union is trying to get this guy a severance package. 87% of the students have been pulled out of the school by their parents.
Neal Erickson, 38, pleaded guilty in May to raping a young boy over the course of three years — from 2006 to 2009 — and was sentenced to 15-30 years in prison. The prison term came over the pleas of seven of Erickson's former fellow teachers at Rose City Middle School, including Sally Campbell, who said in a letter to the judge that “Neal made a mistake.

I was on the PTA at my son's grade school for several years. I quit after I tried to have a teacher removed who had slapped a kindergarten child in the face, slapped hard mind you.
The Union and the head of PTA fought me on this. (I was vice-chair)
In general, I've no problems with Unions, except crap like this, and cop unions protecting brutes and killers.

Unions serve a purpose but god can they be stupid sometimes. In many places it's time to do what Camden did and dissolve the organization and create a new, fresh one without the historic union contracts.
Let's be clear on this: you don't get to hurt the children (or the citizens for that matter) and you don't get to retire before age 65.

Public School teachers are mostly made up of people with Liberal Arts Degrees. No real purpose in life, resentful of successful people, taking one of the few jobs they could claim to be qualified for (do you have a Bachelors degree?).

I'm all for raising their pay and giving teachers what they're worth. But dammit, we also need to be able to set high standards for hires and have the ability to fire the worthless ones.

You are an idiot to come up with that line of reasoning.

The union has no choice, they're obligated to represent him. Using this as a reason for union bashing is silly. His fellow teachers on the other hand had a choice. Knowing their thinking I'd want my kids as far from them as possible.

Fuck you. The typical inner city school teacher, these days, is fucking worthless. All the talented ones have fled to the 'burbs or private schools.

This is the bottom line with regard to teachers pay.
It isn't funny.

I attended a boyscout potluck as a kid and heard its featured motivational speaker, a major league ball player, tell us he worked as a school teacher off-season to make ends meet. Struck me as odd. Here was a starting pitcher, a sports hero for all I knew, and he spent his days and evenings instructing snots like me. Remember Tom Seaver?

Fuck raising their pay, let's review the deal we made with all of our civil servants; you get paid for shit but you get pay and benefits for life. That's the fucking deal: Take it or Leave it.
Nobody else gets paid for life and it's a civil service job so don't expect to get rich. And you - the cops and the firemen, stop with overtime shenanigans...
