It's called Compassion Fatigue.  Each week the media shoves another horror story in our face, and people are numbing their ability to care in order to avoid being emotionally overwhelmed.  And then there are the ongoing horror stories like starving children in Africa.  That shows no sign of ever being fixed, so most people have stopped caring about them.
