Damn, looks like it was a bad year.
Among others, we lost the guy who gave us the chicken pox vaccine. "Wiping out chicken pox" might not be the coolest-sounding achievement; but damn that saved a lot of children's lives and will go on saving lives forever.
I recognize almost zero names on this list.

Philippe Favre (11 December 1961 − 6 December 2013) was a Swiss racing driver killed in a skiing accident five days before his 52nd birthday on 6 December 2013.
Guessing he was a charter member of the Sonny Bono school of tree huggers.

Balls. Twas ever thus. I've watched seasoned news editors, like my ex, fall hard for the hoariest of hoaxes, like this one. Note its ancient pedigree. A good story always seems to trump the truth.
