One of the "Greensboro Four" has passed.

I would toss in some words about the significance of this event--in particular, the non-violent tone of the demonstration, which I believe did a lot to set the tone for "The Movement" in general and probably saved this country a lot of bloodshed in the long term--but I don't think anyone here is that young; y'all don't need the history lesson.

"She says, 'Boys, I am so proud of you. I only regret that you didn't do this 10 years ago,'" McCain said.
"That was the greatest source of inspiration to me, probably for all my life, primarily because it came from a very unexpected person," he said. "You picture 1960 in the South in a little old white lady's space and you are acting out of place, and she compliments you."

Thank God! I can finally eat at that Woolworth's again. Untainted hot sauce? Can I get me some of that!?

Might want to stay away from the mayo, though.

Apropos of nothing, in Goldsboro, NC about ten years ago some enterprising restauranteur bought up an old Woolworth's property and restored/re-opened the lunch counter.  The menu wasn't completely authentic but did focus on homemade soups, patty melts, tuna melts and other wonderful old grill fare (along with some truly delicious tabbouleh and other "exotic" delights).  It was a wonderful place to pop into and sit at the counter for lunch.  I'd special-order mushroom burgers and they'd make them to my exact specifications, and them thangs were about the best burgers I've ever had anywhere.

We have the same thing in our little downtown area.  Sid's Rainbow Grille rose from the ashes of the Rainbow Pharmacy.  Still has all but one of the stools and 40 years worth of memorabilia on the walls and shelves.  Has the typical 2-sided laminated menu and, I have never eaten a bad meal there.  Bad for me maybe, but great tasting.
