Looks like Matthew McConaughey, the lead in Dallas Buyers Club, is having a good year, with strong performances in The Wolf of Wall Street and HBO's True Detective, which premiered last night.

I could watch Woody Harrelson tie his shoes for a hour.

I had planned to read the book but never got around to it. The PBS treatment of the subject was very interesting and has
a lot of input from the author.

They live in Central PA, so coal-smoke based cancers and icy roads are already doing a great job of pruning that side of the family tree. Only my FIL has lived past 65.

This is the weirdest and most fascinating TV I have ever seen in my life.  I cannot fucking wait.

Really, it must be said that if you aren't watching this and coercing everyone you know into watching it you are doing a disservice to television audiences everywhere.  The first season is available for free on Amazon Prime so catch up if you aren't up to speed.

And you'll never stop repeating, I CANNOT believe this is on NETWORK TV.

I CANNOT believe so much of this plot and dialog dreck is CANNIBALIZED from competing dramas. I'm referring here as much to the acclaimed 'True Detective' series as this one.

Won't anyone ever get another original idea?

Here's my own humble account of a Captain we celebrated last year.

John Kendrick Slept Here

The state will recognize "Captain John Kendrick Day" on October 1 and the local hysterical society is throwing a party.

John Kendrick moved to Wareham from Barnstable, MA in 1777 to outfit and take command of the Fanny, a US licensed privateer, or pirate boat boasting a crew of 100 and 18 guns. Its mission, loot British shipping.

Some of the resulting booty furnished Kendrick's Wareham home but he didn't stick around long to enjoy it, dropping from sight at war's end in 1783. Historians assume Kendrick resumed whaling and the coasting trade until October 1, 1787, when the Columbia Expedition sailed out of Boston Harbor, Kendrick commanding. He renamed the Pacific Northwest's largest river Columbia.

Kendrick's subsequent history is an unbroken record of quarrels, cheating, looting, slaughter and international ill-will until he was dispatched himself, grapeshot fragged by his own men in Honolulu (then called Fair Haven) on Dec 3, 1794. By most contemporary accounts, he had the personality of a decayed tooth.

Just finished this series  BBC-The First World War. You'll probably need to register at the site to see the page, but if you like documentaries, it's well worth it.
Anyway, previously all I knew about WWI was it involved trench warfare and an arch dude. But seriously, I became interested in WWI from listening to Dan Carlin's Hardcore History podcast, which it seems may last longer than did the war, and this series is a nice complement to it.

In Bruges- an excellent film I can't seem to talk anyone into watching.

Millers Crossing- is now on my list. When I read about it, I thought maybe I'd already watched it. I was thinking about Mean Streets though. There are some plot similarities. You mook. Old but very good film if only for the fight scene, a young Harvey Keitel and Robert De Niro.

The Beast of War- I'll watch if I can find it. If Stephen Baldwin dies that would be good.

Farewell Etaoin Shrdlu- Sounds interesting but I can't find it.

I'll check out The Affair once I finish watching the new stuff Netflix has trickling down their stream.
Maybe the following has been posted before here,  Instant  Watcher
If one has Netflix, Instant Watcher is the best way to find out what new films and TV series have been added to Netflix. Netflix sure wont tell you.
Just go to the page, in the red bar at top click on "New", and there you go. You can even filter the content by number rating or Rotton Tomatoes Fresh Pick.

My son has been trying to get me to watch The IT Crowd. I didn't know these were on Netflix.

I like the Peep Show. Have you ever watched their sketch comedy show, That Mitchell and Webb Look? It is most excellent.
I think most of it is on YouTube.

TV has not ruined my life. How's that? But who's to dismiss blissful ignorance?

I got a weird early look at the world, old enough when I first encountered television to understand how fucked up it was. Or most of it. Animated Krazy Kat blew my doors off, as it should, with any human. So did bullwinkle moose.

I'd already consumed a double dose of Grimm German gothic, punch & judy and Peruvian radio soap operas, all of them far more reality based than any of the US's tepid dramas and hideous advertising.
