I always thought it was being appointed by/pardoning Nixon, but then I really didn't give a fuck one way or another back then.

An incumbent president always has lots of suck but you're right, the margin was slim. Anything that could offset that fundi cracker smile, banker Bubba Lance, brother Billy and his faith healing sister would go a long way. Thompson's endorsement changed mainstream media attitudes almost overnight.
