Meh. JLP's pic about says it all. Not intended as a 'restraint,' it is a 'passive' method of calming an agitated or hyperactive [autistic] child. It's also effective to hold the child, dim the lights, or remove him (or her, but it's more often males who are affected) from the over-stimulating environment. So, as you would figure, it's more for the parent's convenience than a therapeutic aid: "Stop rocking and get in your damn sock. Mommy wants to watch her stories."
That said, I've never seen one used effectively. Just about all the things you can do to settle an autistic child can have the exact opposite effect intended. This is marginally more humane than just sticking them into a refrigerator box.

If I had an autistic kid, it would end up being a combination of the sock and the refrigerator box.
Kidding.
I think.

Is there anything you will not toss a few score of words at?

Be nice, or we'll have to put you in the sock again.

I've got a short documentary here about her by the guy who did the Mütter Museum curator profile OPSEC posted.
She's clearly nuts, and bright.

Is there anything for which you can actually string a dozen sensible ones together?

I'm sure this is old hat to everyone here, but it is always worth another viewing:

Seventeen. Still no sense yet. I should have allowed for more words. I know the Internets are tough, when you can't use that yellow Crayola on the screen. But it's OK. You're trainable.
And what was wrong with the first spelling of 'faggot?' Needed to make sure you had a 50/50 chance there? I always fancied Il sent le fagot, myself.

I think I saw the same documentary. She almost seems like she lives her life in tha box, and the part you interact with is just her head poking out.

Cruel poster Razors_Edge wrote such a hilarious review of this 4 years ago, Roger_That ordered a VHS copy. That text lurks around here somewhere but don't recall we ever got to see the video. Thanks.
