I was going to put this with Sic's hat, but everyone would have complained. Enjoy:
Drugs 'legal in 10 years' claim
The legalisation of all drugs is "inevitable", according to the Chief Constable of North Wales.
Richard Brunstrom, who has campaigned for drugs like heroin to be made legal, says he believes the move towards decriminalisation is "10 years away".
The chief constable said repealing the Misuse of Drugs Act would destroy a major source of organised crime. He also said he thinks ecstasy is safer than aspirin. Drugs charity DrugScope said legalisation is "unlikely".
Speaking on the BBC's Today programme, the controversial chief constable acknowledged that his was a minority view, but he said attitudes were changing.
"I'm certainly out of step with the majority of senior police officers, but not all of them," he said... (source)
He's also mistaken if he thinks any industrial-strength hallucinogen is safer than aspirin, but 'safety' is obviously a relative measure; i.e., it may not be the 'active ingredient' that gets you, but the side effects, or your own metabolic reaction. If all drugs were legal, and various governments had regulatory control over their harvest, formulation, and manufacture, then there would still be people who who'd create problems for others by their own personal usage (as is the case with alcohol, tobacco, prescription medications, etc.). Just tossing that out there.
I'm sure there are a few people here with an enlightening viewpoint to share.
EDIT: Just to 'compare and contrast,' Washington state has a controlled-substances homicide law. I am not implying that I agree or disagree with the statute by mentioning it, but it's worth noting the ideological difference just one ocean away.

While every car made today can do 100 mph, how many are ever driven that fast, even once?

When I was a boy I had a cat. And then I got a set of lawn darts for my birthday. Well, you can see where this is going...
