If you want to learn sudden-onset oversteer, get an old (70's - 80's) Jap pickup and drive it on dirt.

Pic unrelated.

Who needs a jap pickup?  All I have to do on dirt is glare at the throttle.

Dealing with snap oversteer is all I know with my little 300hp Neon SRT; do not touch brake.  Once you lose traction in a FWD it's all over.  Sliding down the road backwards is not fun.

That happened to me once in the late 80’s around Sacramento.  I bought the below Dodge for my ex and lost it once.  Fortunately I powered out of it.  I agree, backwards is no fun.  I was used to a pick up and other rear wheel vehicles at the time.

Last winter I was pulling a fairly heavy trailer up in the Black Hills on a windy gravel road.  I came to a steep curvy hill that was packed in ice and decided I better make a high speed run at it because the F-150 I was driving was only two wheel drive.  I hit the hill going about sixty and only made it about halfway up before the F-150 wouldn't go forward anymore and started sliding backwards.  Normally I'm decent at backing up trailers, but found out that I can't do it sliding backwards at an angle with the brakes locked up.  Thankfully the trailer cushioned the brand new F-150 from the two trees I slid into.

Funny, we bought a '95 Wrangler for my eldest just last year; he still doesn't understand how lucky he is.  Also the heater in it is dodgy yet he has yet to find time to fix it, I imagine that will change quickly though now that we are in MA and the weather has finally snapped.

Now you would have thought he would have figured it out when that spring storm chased and caught us on the plains during our journey out here and my heater blower went out; but apparently he has important video games to play.  Ahh the short term memory of a 17 yr old...

We had a 2004 JCW Mini, Melons loved it.  It was tight and fast, like driving a go-cart; however my size 11 foot would get stuck under the clutch and I bounced my head a lot.  If you are large I would avoid it just because it's really design for a small to medium sized person.  On the other hand Melons is shopping for a new Mini for her commute as we speak.  Quality wise I think they are pretty crap and would really check the reviews; we had numerous annoying problems with her 2004.  In the end Melons will do what she's going to do and obviously I'll just have to deal with it.

If you do buy one get the JCW and prepare to have bruised kidney's on the highway.

I'm 6' tall and have one... I fit just fine.  And I *LOVE* my MINI.  Handles like it's on rails, gets decent gas mileage and I've hardly had to do any service work on it.

I didn't get the JCW model because I like my kidneys and I don't feel like servicing a blower every few years.

Get the convertible.  They're a blast.

I got mine with the extra chrome package, arm rest, upgraded Harmon-Kardon radio/CD and with the tan interior (so it wouldn't get FRYING hot in the sun, like the black seats will).   I added a trailer hitch to drag my smaller day-sailor boat up to the lake... tows 1000lbs just fine.   the convertible also includes a back-up alarm (mostly because seeing out the rear window with the top up is nearly impossible... you learn to rely upon your mirrors.)

If you never have to deal with snow and ice go for the mini!  My ex had one and during the spring and summer that car was a freaking blast.  It felt quick, was comfortable on long drives, sipped the fuel and had a very high fun factor.  During the winter I would have felt safer on ice skates at forty miles an hour.  Not sure if better tires would have fixed the problem or not, I think the car was just too light.

I spent a winter working 30 miles south of Carlin NV. 5000 foot elevation.

FUCK ice and snow.  FUCK ice forming inside your nostrils. FUCK that tingly sensation on nose and ears that indicates onset of frostbite.

I was driving a Toyota HiLux with a camper shell on it for the weight, had Dunlop hydrophillic rally tires on it. They worked wonderfully. Somewhere in my archives, I have a pic of my co-worker shoveling gravel into the back seat of his sedan to accomplish the same thing.

(Michelin Rally 240's. Those tyres were so good, I remember the designation after all this time. Tyres not tires, since they were Michelins)

Melons is entranced with the camping trailer made for the Mini, so as y'all fellas know I probably don't have a say in the conversation.  I suspect my input will be just "Yes Ma'am" and the signing of a check.

Teardrop trailers are aplenty - there's many different brands and styles - so don't get fixated on the 'MINI-specific' one... they all can be towed behind the MINI.  There's wood, fiberglass and aluminium models, and all have different features.   Shop around.  The MINI one is probably priced higher because of what it is.

Now, if you want to own the most amazing trailer going, check this one out:

Ya know I like me a sleeper but that's a bit over the top and there's a lot I don't like about the setup even as a parts car.

However thank you for remembering, we're just putting my toy back on the road now that the weather is clear.  No we've not dyno'd the thing we just have gear rules - the boy and the lady aren't allowed out of third and daddy (me) isn't allowed out of fourth.

Getting into fifth is a scary venture as the car lifts when you come off throttle to shift, lifting at a buck forty is really not a good thing when you are driving a Neon.

It's a family car.  That's what I'd tell the Boss if I dragged it home.   Have you considered hood vents?  Or the slightly less mature boy racer wing?  Keeping under 140 is a barely acceptable solution.

I considered buying this:

https://cruelery.com/uploads/82_1975187_10201788409580598_1055442625_n.jpg

I was told it could not be parked at our house and she would NEVER ride in it.  I think it might be the blue tufted velvet, chandelier, front and rear custom body work, or maybe just the murals.  I had every intention of getting rid of the tiny wheels and air bagging it to make it driveable.

Indeed. It goes nicely with the current collection.  However, it needs brake hydraulics, flushing of the fuel system, engine tune up, drain and refresh of all lubricants and tidying up of the electricals.  But the good bit is that I virtually stole it, so there's plenty of cushion in terms of how much I can spend before I break even.

Prom night?  I was thinking it would be the ultimate rally car.  Running with people driving serious sports cars they spent $150-300k on in that thing would have me laughing for days.  Dress like someone from an old Cheech and Chong movie, install a fog machine.

I'd love a new Camaro Z/28 but it's not in my budget.  I like going around curves fast.  The Mustang has only been in the garage six years.  I'm years from another new car. By then the monsters should be driving and I might get something with two seats.  Maybe something that corners and will do better than 200.

'39 Plymouth 4 Door Convertible.  300 made, 17 left.  We did the first half of the restoration (engine, rolling chassis, body paint) and the current owner assembled and finished it.  2 tone was not the original paint scheme, but the solid colors they originally came out with were pretty awful.

I'm actually not a fan of the color scheme, but it is multiple coats of lacquer, so at least that's legit.  When we originally got the car it was black fenders tan body... looked fucking awesome.  I'll see if I can find a pic of it.

Here's the sob story.  The frame had been cut and actually had 2x4s supporting the rear body section.  The engine was a proper P8, but a replacement.  We got a proper '39 dodge frame (identical), and then someone decided that since this was going to be a "driver" that we put a larger displacement version of the P8 in it.  I think it's out of a DeSoto, but is a valid Plymouth block.  We sold the car with both engines, but the non-correct engine had been minted so that's what the owner used.

TLDR:  Numbers don't match, never did... sucks the value right out of a rare model.

Z06 Corvettes are real cars.  I've seen them.  I can run with them to 150 or so, after that their superior aerodynamics walk off and leave me.  Six or seven years from now, when it's time to think about replacing the mustang, I may even buy a used one.  It's always possible the Boss will have convinced me to become responsible, mature, and drive slow. In that case I'll buy something Camry like.
