While Heinlein took a rather freewheeling attitude about sex in his novels, I suspect in real life he was more of a situationalist. I’ll illustrate with an example from my own life.

A handsome, charming, and intelligent bisexual gentleman I’ve known for about a decade has recently indicated an interest in having sex with me. At this point, I’m not up for this, but I’m sure he’ll still be available for casual playtime in the future. On the surface his offer seems perfectly reasonable and acceptable.

The reasons I won’t take him up someday on his otherwise attractive offer? He is separated from his wife, whom I know and like. She seems to have moved on, but he is still carrying a torch for her. He recently visited her (she has moved to another state) and for all I know he may have made a pitch for getting back together. Meanwhile, he is seeing a woman who is a friend of mine. She would be very hurt if I played with him. Last, he has a closet case male fuckbuddy on the extreme periphery of my social circle whom I consider to be very bad news. He may or may not have other male or female fuckbuddies I don’t know about; these people would have no effect on my decision about sleeping with him.

The wife would be a minimal deterrent because I don’t think she wants him back. The closet case fuckbuddy is a bigger problem. Would he present a danger to me if I slept with my friend, and Closet Case found out? The absolute deal-breaker is my female friend he is dating. I don’t know if she knows about the bisexuality, but I do know she is absolutely taken with him. Her husband died six years ago and this is the first serious relationship she has had since then.

The only reason I figured out my friend is actively bisexual is because the closet case has gotten overly cuddly with him in public when said closet case was drunk.

At first glance the offer appears awesome because the bisexual is a very hot man, and I would go for it if it weren’t for the complications. At some point I’ll be ready to date men again, and sex with the bisexual friend would be a nice way to ease back into the scene. During times when I have a steady partner, I simply wouldn’t exercise the benefits option, and when my little heart gets broken I could go to him for emotional support with a side of hot sex!
