I don't get this. All of a sudden concussions are causing suicides? Why haven't we seen this pattern before the last ten years? Are rugby players, downhill skiers, boxers, etc. killing themselves? Seems to me it's probably pharmaceuticals on top of brain injury causing this new wave of suicides. Old school athletes had nowhere near the rules and equipment that modern day athletes have that protect them. I'm calling bullshit on all of this.

No reason not to think substance abuse in competitive sport is at all time highs, but in my lifetime it was always part of the game.

Not recreational drugs choad, modern day under the radar performance enhancing drugs. Motor sports are a great example of what I'm talking about. Those guys get concussions all of the time but they aren't killing themselves. They are also the guys that don't benefit from steroids (except for vanity) in their sport.

Not sure there is such a thing as a recreational drug, legal or not.
I watched stellar and fearless athletes, among them a cousin, tailspin into pain management when age and injury caught up to them. Wasn't pretty.
Dock Ellis, for instance, went clean and spent his last 20 years counseling addicts in treatment centers and prisons. My next door neighbor rented her second floor to Ellis until he croaked of cirrhosis before his time.

I have a hard time believing the guy crawled into a dumpster and shot himself. If he was found in his dorm room or such, then fine, but a dumpster?
