The point is that they weren't funding research, they were funding propaganda and whitewash to be presented as research.

For all practical purposes, it doesn't matter whether the change in the weather is anthropogenic or not. The planet's getting warmer and pretty soon, Manhattan and New Orleans and plenty of other places will have bigass floods every year, and when the fuck are we going to start planning for that??? Planning for a permanent drought in the west?
That's what pisses me off.
