Ban the friggin balloons already. A blight across the moors. But that is the least of the island's problems, they need to ban the party organizers.
You know, Nantucket used to be a nice place till it was overrun by party planners. Don't think I am joking either. That town is now lousy with high end party planner, event organizers extraordinaire and other bozos who have migrated up from the Hamptons. There is no way a human could even attend all the events these professional organizers throw out there. Just a few years back my friends with restaurant and booze businesses were decrying the lack of attendence at the food and wine festivals. Now you could not get an invite to some little snots Christmas in July party for love or money. The scale of private parties and charitable functions is off the hook. And I guarentee you that these event planners are making more than you are just by selling authentic events to the billionaire wanna bees.
As for Fnords quick thinking to include an exemption for compassionate care, no need for that, any self disrespecting Nantucketer knows that the island's preferred way out is the smack that is always waiting for you there on the Grey Lady. Just remember to tell someone you are checking out of the Nantucket hotel, so you don't make it hard on the "B1-B Guest workers" who have to pick up after you. And please stop driving out to the moors and hotshotting in your SuVs, only to be discovered way too late. That is a blight worse than the balloons. Don't need another Town Meeting law against driving out to the moors one last time, some public education funds spread around should work just fine. I am sure both Susan Oktay and Glowaki can agree on that. As both suck at the largess of the taxpayer teat, she the head of UMass and keeps quiet about the social impacts of overdevelopment and the conservation foundation's cozy relationships, and Glowaki the false arch conservaative all about getting gubermit out of business, who has recieved more 100s of millions of the local taxpayer's money than anyone. Via back room manipulating of sealed bids for his island infrastructure construction firm.
And oh yeah, never and I mean never, OD in your friends house when you know they will just dump your half naked body in the harbor to wash underneeth the private wharfs with the yachts and the multi-million dollar 500 sq foot fishing shanties. That is hard for even the tightest corporate ceo and his family to look away from and ignore. You could ruin someone's vacation.

Whew, feel better? Islands everywhere are defined by their crackpot eccentrics - revisit the UK you don't believe me - but Nantucket is in a class by itself.
My all-time favorite was the guy who wouldn't sell me his reasonably priced Hobie Cat when he learned I'm a peasant off islander and his boat would no longer moor, beach and dock with discerning swells.

Heh, lets just say it was a mighty strong pot of coffee this morning.
I have nothing against the whackos, many may say I am cut from that cloth, or the places that provide safe harbor, just sometimes enough is enough.

I remember that, specifically I remember when the price went through the roof. Has there been any update on the situation?
