Unless the mother turns out to be a fucked up crackhead or someone capable of killing her own child, I'm going to assume the child died of some natural cause and the mother had a little break with reality caused by overwhelming grief.

The behavior is common among primates. Sudden infant death, no visible trauma, grieving mom can't part with the corpse, can't admit it's dead. Eight year old gets lunched chasing a ball into traffic, darwin award winner, one less mouth to feed and a different story.

That's the most likely explanation. Although anyone who has ever had a toddler knows it can seem like they want to be pushed all day and night, in the end it only seems that way.
