Aside from butt ugly, JR, doesn't look like it'd manage well at all in heavy seas.

Oddly it might, but it would be a wet ride. There is a move towards these narrow axe like and dreadnought hulls. They are used extensively for fast support ships to access way out into oil fields. But this one has the master suite in the bow. The imperial sized bed is the 3rd window back. The first 2 windows are a study which is open side to side. He wanted to ride up there crashing through a big seaway. I would expect someone would try that once and then never do it again.

How to say it, elegant and ugly at the same time.

About the best one can say is that it looks like a iphone box. And for the privillage of getting to bend the ear off the architect the design firm chained the boat to the dock till Job's widow ponied up 8 million in unitemized charges invoiced  as design changes. There is elegence in the fit and finish of a Feadship. Very custom features. The Hull PDLC windows electronicaly shift opaqueness. The radars masts periscope when needed. The retracting ibeams for the boat cranes are covered in laminates of the finest edangered tropical hardwoods. All for a mere $200 m. Your only consulation Apple fans, is he was overcharged by about twice what it should have been for this hardware package, just lke he did to you.

You see gilded obscenities like that every day so the wonder is you haven't turned entirely to numb to it. Any other priceless examples of slack jaw revolting?

Hmmm, if it's more examples of slack jaw revolting waste from atop the pyramid of all human endeavors you call for, that would require its own thread.

Hmm, maybe it should focus in the other direction.

I've seen wood working so purdy it'd make you cry. I lived in a Herreshoff house, right on the parade route, made you smile everywhere you looked - just like their boats - and I've slept on 250 year old sheets of wheel spun flax, a magic carpet ride in heat or cold. Line dried, they felt like corrugated cardboard. Commoners owned these things, not tacky titans.

A good idea. I see a lot of work being done by craftsman who still take pride in melding their own hands abilities with what nature provides. Both in wood and other technologies.

I know that street. I will sometimes just go park at Herreshoff's old factory and and walk between those houses in the quiet light.

Yep. Another High Street.

Problem is nothing spoils noteworthy craftsmanship quicker than notoriety. Guy I know owns a boat that gives off its own special hum, especially in drydock, whether you know its history or not, and trust me, you do. Jaws lunched it in '74, and yet, after 50 years, the boat still floats, with a fascinating backstory of its own. My friend's dad built the boat himself and I'll say no more because he is a friend. And he'll probably outlive me.

Just one of those backyard black walnuts of yours would make a couple ageless dining room tables, and then some. Most neat neat stuff belongs to someone else, even if you're an imperial despot.

Good to keep that in mind. It pays not to get too caught up on the color of the emperor's new clothes.  There will be time aplenty to toss them out a window. Whether still attached to the emperor or not.  And in again will always sail another ship of fools.

mmyh, don't be fooled just another $160m boat. Been on there, done that. That thing is the "A". And is not as futuristic as you might think. Yes the retractable deck over the forward swimming pool is cool and all, but the russians winced at installing the diesel electric plan and went with standard propolsion.  It is actually a cookie cutter french hull design, barring the conning tower like clad superstructure. The wife then spent that budget on the interior designer. Ultra modern interior. Standard yacht systems throughout. Boring and pretentious, Russians what can you say.

Quite possibly true.  You should spend some time in the UK.  Cates loved this story when I shared it with him.
