This is fucking awesome.

It is getting to be the time of year the asshole hunters are starting to string night vision cameras throughout the woods here. I was going to buy a Godzilla costume and a giant Smurf costume and wage epic battles where ever I found the cameras. I may add a clown suit into the mix just to honor this American hero.

I love the line "...if you see a clown where you typically would not see a clown..."

Just let that phrase sit for a minute...............

And topiaries.  Man, nothing in my life up to that point had frightened me in quite the way those things did.

Also, clowns?  When I first heard about this I thought maybe it was people LARPing in the woods, or some kind of elaborate joke.  I'm still not certain about the "luring children" part of the stories--whose word do we have on that?  The kids, right?
At this point I enjoy the thought that this thing's taken on a life of its own and, like the "Satanist baby-sacrificing network" of the 80s-90s, people will invent evil feral clowns from the wilderness out of whole cloth and it'll snowball and go on for years, and if we're lucky the FBI will assign an entire task force to investigate it.

"Alleged clown."  Heh.
Relevant:  Say you are a person who wants to lure children into the woods.  Wouldn't you pick almost any costume other than "clown"?  Little old lady, policeman, ice cream man, Freddy Krueger?  Have you ever met a kid who likes clowns?

Jerry Lewis produced and acted in The Day the Clown Cried (1972), the story of a clown in Auschwitz which, because of legal difficulties, was never released.

I had no idea. I tripped over that story 20 years ago and this thread prompted me to check again.

More background.
