Judging by the arrangement, that must be the overture to a Broadway Musical, circa 1956-57.

For me today is party day, I will be very drunk in a very short order (noon has passed); huge thanks to any and all who have answered the call of the Corps.  I shall lift a cup to the others as soon as we tick past midnight.

Here's to us and those like us, damn few left.

(Actually I believe there a many left but that is a great toast)

Ill salute those who served, and their families who have to put up with all the bullshit and sacrifice the military asks of it's soldiers and their families.

I can't say it any better than that, except by adding an apostrophe to "I'll." May the Corps always have a soft landing, whenever they land on anything at all.

Happy Veteran's Day!

There is a vast difference between people who saw action under fire and those that fucked off for 2 - 4 years and drank a lot after their duty was over each day.  I understand the con-job in getting butts in boots so we look fierce to the rest of the world.  I'm just saying I respect anybody that actually put their life on the line much more than those who merely "served".

In defense of those who "served" but did not see combat, of which I am one, I offer this:  Everyone who has ever worn the uniform joined up or was drafted with the understanding that they could end up in combat.  During my four year enlistment during the Vietnam war, I fully expected  orders to arrive any day to transfer me to a swift boat in country.  When the order came to my station, I only had 11 months left on my enlistment so they sent a lifer instead of me.  So don't tell me that those who didn't get the call were sitting around fucking off.

PS  Happy Birthday Em and all Jarheads!

Phreddy, you were a white kid with a steady income, such as it was, and mess hall chow nautical miles beyond any other service. If you didn't fuck off at every opportunity, there was something wrong with you.

Never said I didn't fuck off.  I was stationed on Treasure Island during hippy summer of 1967.  I visited Fillmore West and other concert clubs twice a week.  I did every drug there is except heroin, and I spent a month in the Marine brig for smoking pot on my ship.  So, I certainly did my fair share of fucking off.  But, I also spent harrowing days and nights at sea searching for and rescuing idiots who got themselves in trouble.  I also spent a year supervising the crew which loaded all the munitions being shipped to Vietnam.  That facility, Port Chicago at the Concord Naval Station, blew up during WWII and killed everyone within miles, and again in 1961.  Between all that and the axe blade of being sent to the rivers of Vietnam hanging over my head, drugs and alcohol was a go to remedy.  Not to say it was anything close to hunkering down in a foxhole while mortars drop all around.
