Doesn't make sense, so far as I understand current safety regulations require all doors to open from the inside unless the child safety lever is activated and that only applies to rear doors.

Cute story but looks like click-bait.

Nah...this one's real. There's lots of sites that are reporting on the same story (Google it), Or you could go right to the police report:

http://spdblotter.seattle.gov/2016/11/3 … oor-locks/

This is just another chapter in the ongoing "1984" saga where those who control the technology grant themselves power which mere people can't access or override.

Well, yeah; that's the first thing I would have tried. That or a side window.

But it sounds like the guy was too zonked to even be aware of what was happening. It's not even clear that he was aware that he was locked in until after the police arrived.

That's to my point, he crashed and got arrested.  I would be very surprised and highly concerned if they were able to lock you in a car remotely.  How would I ever be able to self-investigate pizzagate then?

I see your point.

AND...the fact that you are placing your gut hunch ahead of an unconfirmed story (approaching this skeptically) is a good thing.

I mean, I would LIKE to tell you that I've never had to retract a story which I accepted as truth and posted, but later found to be false. I would really like to be able to say that.

I suspect most everyone here has swallowed and posted fake news as real, then endured the resulting gleeful ridicule. I know I have.

There is a tipping point, my mother was just visiting for 3 weeks.  I can attest that she is now well past the tipping point on modern yellow journalism.

I'll sing Choad's lament of the degradation of actual reporting and rapid spread of sponsored and other such links using thin bits of masquerade to attract hit $'s.

Oh, yeah; me too.

And really...the biggest part of establishing credibility comes down to knowing and trusting your sources. And since you don't know me, you're right to be cautious.

The worst confirmation of whether a story is true of not is how many people are reporting the same "news".

Offline

#13 2016-12-06 09:50:38

Well, you're right...mere numbers don't guarantee truth, that's for sure. But ten credible sources are still better than two credible sources.

Why? Because if a source is credible, it means that they have done their own investigation, and so they are backing a story with their reputation.

And in the case of the 'BMW nabs bandit' story, there were a lot of credible sources reporting on it (and I failed to express that fact as clearly as I should have).

I don't see anything about it on the Associated Press, Reuters or CNN websites.

So, not sure what you consider credible.  Or, should I say, credulous?  :-P

Not sure what you're looking for here, Baywolf. Do you still doubt the story?

I thought when I produced the Seattle Police Blotter as a source that it ended the issue of 'whether it actually happened'.

Three additional thoughts: 1) this is a brand new story; more reports will probably show up subsequently -- possibly including reports from those news organizations you specifically mention; 2) this in not a controversial story (meaning it's hard to attribute an adequate motive to explain why someone would intentionally falsify reports); and 3) this in not a critical 'need to know' story -- more like human interest, and tech related. Why would you think every news source would be expected to cover this?

Yah, me too, and I really hated it.  However, it did lead to some needed introspection.  I had been less than aware of how much I enjoy being a smartass and correcting people.  It really stings when that goes in the other direction.

Because Reuters and Associated Press ARE the fucking news.  Until it hits their wires, it's apocryphal, not fact.  It's the same reason no television news station in the US has jumped on this.  Did it happen?  Maybe.  And don't get me started about the legitimacy of police blotters.

Grow some thicker skin because it's way more fun winding you up than it is to pursue a story that I couldn't give a shit about.

Nothing wrong with the thickness of my skin, Baywolf (by the way, you don't use (sic) AND correct a spelling error -- one or the other). Bluster and braggadocio aside, I just decimated your silly argument. If you're wondering what that strange sensation you're experiencing is, it's what it feels like to have your clock cleaned.

You and I are going to get along just fine. I like bare knuckle too, but I suspect that I'm better at it than you are.
