Sir John Hurt died yesterday, as you have probably already heard. I happened to watch two films this week in which he starred, one of them being the new release and Oscar contender "Jackie". I wasn't sure that the actor I thought was Hurt was actually him, since he looked so old and feeble. Now I know why; he was quite ill.

Here is a partial listing which I came across of Hurt's work (his TV material, for example, is not included). To say Hurt was prolific would be a staggering understatement:

There is a great bit on the Hellboy DVD commentary where Del Toro talks about how great an actor John Hurt is. It is the scene after Bruttenholm gets diagnosed with cancer. He talks about how unbelievable it is that Hurt is conveying incredible sadness in the next scene, though the camera is shooting him from across the street, and you only see his back. And it really is true, Hurt is just radiating this understated but intense devastation, and even while you are watching, you can't really see how he is doing it, he just is that good.

From The AV Club, third of the three fora I have anything to do with, and which I recommend.

Yup; we can't forget that Hurt was "The War Doctor", and starred in the 50th Anniversary Doctor Who extravaganza.
