In all fairness I'm for privatized prisons if recidivism, education, safety and health are the only performance and billing points.
I'm not OK with this as ATC is an important cog in our defense and supply chain network.

The FAA is one sclerotic organization.
In the not-to-distant future, AI will be flying the aircraft and controlling the airspace.
In the meantime, a majority of controllers will simply change hats.
DoD has their own ATC system...AF controllers are still required to pass FAA tests before they can be hired in civil aviation.
The military will continue to provide a pool of qualified candidates who'll be happy with their defined contribution retirement plans and HSAs. *wink*
For what it's worth, DOT allowed most aircraft heavy maintenance "outsourcing" to lower cost foreign repair stations (Elizabeth Dole) ...where a majority of the technicians are unlicensed.
The quality isn't six sigma, but there've been few safety repercussions...that we're aware of.
