I think Tiabbi is claiming 'special circumstances', and I agree with him.
If you accept the premise laid out in the title (that Roger Ailes was one of the worst Americans ever, and that the Fox News founder made this the hate-filled, moronic country it is today) then pretending to mourn his demise would be an act of colossal dishonesty.
Since I agree with Tiabbi's premise, I too choose to withhold the customary niceties. The world is a better place with Roger Ailes gone.

It's not quite accurate to say that Ailes invented hyper-partisan media; he merely revived it for the current age.

I think you're probably right, although, modern technology provides the opportunity for media dominance which I doubt existed in the past. But yellow journalism has pretty much always existed. I don't even think we can claim inventing it since we most likely learned it from the Brits.
