In a typical Donald Trump maneuver we are set to deplete the strategic advantage we have used to build and maintain our long-term dominance. For decades we have bought foreign fuels because we were rich enough to afford their fuels while we hoarded our own.
If you think in historic terms the British Empire, the German Empire and the Soviet Union fell due to the lack of strategic fuel resources of their own - Germany and Britain had none and the Soviets resources were impossible to tap(at that time). America has kept an immense amount of known deposits untapped as a strategic reserve because we could and did become and stay the most powerful economy in the world without expending that reserve. The black side (in both ways) of our balance sheet has long made the dollar the most stable and valuable currency in the world.
Remember the old adage about never touching your capital wealth, only spend from the funds it generates.

Trump represents the last gasp of a dying aristocracy, furiously clinging to a way of life which is rapidly becoming irrelevant. Twenty five years from now I think every one will find it amusing that we took Trump so seriously, because he was so obviously doomed to fail at everything he tried over the long term.
But, of course, we don't live over the long term, and right now Trump is trying to set the world record for the number of bad decisions made in the shortest period of time.
