Shamelessly stolen from another forum (credit to RopeFiend):

Key in your zipcode and see what the Environmental Working Group knows about the recent water quality tests for YOUR tap water.  Dallas city water is in violation for 10 different contaminants.

* My water, which so far as I know comes directly from Cascade Mountain snow melt, exceeds safe guidelines in six chemical categories, all known carcinogens. Who knew.

If you don't read the town water reports BEFORE you buy you are an idiot

When you are evaluating the house check the school district, the police blotter AND the water quality report, etc, etc.

That should be done before you buy a house.

I had to threaten my city water authority (which is 100% run by the same extended family) with a FOIA just to get my neighborhoods water tests. The only piece of paper they were willing to give me just listed some of these same results, but were a minimum of 2 years out of date and some were 7 years out of date. (Which the EPA allows). 7 years ago there were more cows than houses around here, but not any more. The scariest thing my FOIA turned up wasn't anything in the water, it was that the local water authority only sends any of their water out for testing once a year. They operate 4 wells for the city, but the one that serves me only serves my neighborhood. The numbers they report to the EPA was the average of all 4 wells, so even if one was high, the others would balance it out, even though the 5000 people served by that well got whatever it was full strength.

And I just found out last month that they are going to build a 7-11, with underground tanks, right across the 2 lane road from the well that services my house. If we don't NIMBY that out of here, we are looking to move. Bout time, I'm getting sick of the sight of the smoke from my neighbor's cabin.

Same - same.
