What is the antonym of "Exceed"??

Merriam-Webster offers only "Near Antonyms:  lose (to)."  I supposed that works.

Another site suggested maintain as an antonym for exceed, but that doesn't sit right with me.

Can it be that you have found a word with no real antonym?

It's my son's question and it appears that "exceed" rhymes with "Orange"

(To be more accurate we tried a few things and it appears to be mutation of "cede", perhaps to start as "giving more" and the French "decede" which meant something to them (Melons and the boy speak passable French) but meant nothing to me who only does German and Japanese.  (And neither well anymore.))
