You've apparently never seen women raised in hermetically sealed bubbles.

I learned touch typing on ancient Royal manuals at 14, the only male in a class of twenty. Wander past any news stand in the early 70s, you saw them yourself.  Half were Ford Agency models, the other half needed no makeup. My only choice was 120 words a minute or suffocate.

My little brother collectively referred to these unfortunates as Veg. Nothing between their ears.

My first machine was a Hermes, and it lasted a long, long time.  When I first got my driver's license, I worked as a delivery boy for a typewriter/adding machine repair shop, and our biggest clients were the Washington Post and Evening Star.  Both papers had a hodge-podge of machines, but a lot of them were Royals.  They were heavy bastards to lug around.

By 1972, in Cleveland at least, typing classes were completely co-ed as it was a mandatory course for "College Prep".  By that time we were using the big Underwood upright machines, but my parents bought me a nice Royal portable for home use.  I had that thing until some asshole stole it in the 1980's.

For all its style and voltage, the Facit is about as quick in the hands as one of those 1929-model Underwoods that used to be standard equipment in the city room of the New York Mirror. Nobody knows exactly what happened to all those old Underwoods when the Mirror died of bad age, but one rumor in the trade says they were snapped up at a dime on the dollar by Norman Cousins and then resold at a tidy profit to the Columbia Journalism Review.

Which is interesting, but it is not the kind of thing you normally want to develop fully in your classic Pyramid Lead. . . and that’s what I was trying to deal with, when I suddenly realized that my typewriter was as worthless as tits on a boar hog.

It looked very much like it.  A very well made machine.

It types envelopes but I might have to boot black the ribbon first. Fed me 10 years and I still love the font.

On the inside I'm 14, on the outside I'm 48. I feel like a baby.

A woman I know caught me giggling a few weeks ago and asked, "What are you, 12?"

Goober's right, males don't evolve much past puberty.
