On this day in 1932 during the administration of Herbert Hoover, Washington D.C. police and the U.S. Army battled with WWI veterans camped out at the capitol who were demanding early payment of their service bonus, killing three people and wounding fifty-five more.

Back when: Living in London the late 70's, off and on up to the mid 80's. Worked at the Irish Music Centre (if I recall the name properly) in Camden and up in Cricklewood. Lots of old timers hinted in conversation of being in the IRA...
The wife was caught in the Selfridge Bombing before I met her. She missed serious injury, thank goodness. Having to evacuate trains, divert from areas, etc from bomb scares was a frequent occurrence. We almost got caught in the middle of the El Al affair, we were walking when the bus was attacked a couple of blocks down the street from it, ran like hell...
This picture is an apt depiction of civil unrest in Northern Ireland.

I'm sure someone else has already made this in our big wide world but I came up with this on my very own and Melons loved it.

As a child, I was told the stories of my mother's family, her father organizing Rail Road workers, and escaping assassination attempts (twice) for his efforts.
My uncle, organizing for the Teamsters in the 1930's was not so lucky, he was murdered by having his brake lines cut.
If you think the struggle is over, it isn't. Organize, dammit:
Frank H. Little was an American labor leader and organizer with the IWW who, on this day in 1917, was sprung from jail and lynched in Butte, Montana. 10,000 workers lined the route of his funeral procession.

It seems it doesn't matter which political party is in power when it comes to helping the poor and working class:

I get where he's coming from, at this end of life it does seem like futility. Can the kids coming up as voters really force the issue on continuing to elect people that actually do the right thing for everybody?

Elizabeth Gurley Flynn, born on this day in 1890, was a communist activst and feminist who played a leading role in the Industrial Workers of the World (IWW), the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), and the Communist Party USA (CPUSA).
Flynn was a vigorous proponent of women's rights, birth control, and women's suffrage. She joined the Communist Party USA (CPUSA) in 1936 and late in life, in 1961, became its chairwoman.
Flynn was also a founding member of the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), but was expelled in 1940 during an institution-wide purge of all communists from ACLU leadership. This decision was reversed twelve years after her death, in 1976.
In 1948, she was arrested, along with eleven other prominent members of the Communist Party, for violating the Smith Act. She served two years in prison, and continued her political activism after her release.
Flynn died during a visit to the Soviet Union, where she was accorded a state funeral with processions in the Red Square attended by over 25,000 people.
"I fell in love with my country - its rivers, prairies, forests, mountains, cities and people. No one can take my love of country away from me! I felt then, as I do now, it's a rich, fertile, beautiful land, capable of satisfying all the needs of its people. It could be a paradise on earth if it belonged to the people, not to a small owning class."
Elizabeth Gurley Flynn

You're better than that. Who besides, maybe, Jet doesn't already know that? I just think that a single child's life is worth more than all the guns in this country. So, let's find some sensible middle-ground and get some new Washington assholes to go along with it.

Context matters, Dusty, and you know it. You drink too much and die? Your fault. You overdose on meth? Your fault. There's a significant difference between a classroom full of kids being gunned down in a matter of minutes and dying of a heart attack because you're a fat fuck.
