I was just listening to an explanation of how the cold war was sold on a mistaken belief. After the Cuban missile crisis, the result of the Soviet missiles being removed rom Cuba was sculpted to appear that a strong unyielding stance could make the Soviets blink and cower if we were mightier with our nukes. But that is not what happened. It was all a tit for tat negotiation.  A secret deal was made to remove our missiles from Turkey. And so we enshrined the idea that more and more capacity would save us.
