Or did it?

A somewhat disturbing look into our future.

“We will approach them and say that the bus is coming later today and invite them in to the home for a coffee,” said Mr Neureither. “Five minutes later they have completely forgotten they wanted to leave.”

I have to say that while the humor of this does not escape me, it really does seem like a very gentle way to keep confused patients from wandering and coming to harm.  If you've ever had to deal with an Alzheimer's victim you will understand how it can be when they get it into their poor lost heads that they must go "home" to a (long-dead) spouse or parents...Trying to bring them to the present only frightens and angers them.  You have to wait for the "spell" to pass.

Those who haven't can consider themselves blessed.

My ancient friend Ernie tests himself and his hapless wife every day, probing for symptoms. When I remind him his usual complaints irritate everyone, I'm convinced he yearns to turn simple so that shit won't bother him anymore.

His wife of 75 years is slipping but still has enough wits to rail at elder health care for the criminal racket it is.

Yes while it does seem humane It still gives me the heebee jeebees for what the efficacy of this portends for society. It is just a matter of time till some government of ours learns that the velvet glove works better then a Bush style fisting. But I suppose by then too few of us will be left to complain let alone realize the subterfuge.
