Britain is a shithole that despite all its windbagging about democracy and freedom,  has never progressed far past being a basic feudalistic nanny state that survives on weak milky tea and a diet of flat beer, eggs and chips. I have no respect for them nor any desire to ever visit.

Australia OTOH is a special case - we are a country that has never been truly exposed to fascism or oppression, and apart from a few WW2 Japanese bombs, has never experienced true conflict. As a result the citizenry is soft and lets the government walk all over them. If this were Spain, our cities would be burning over the events imposed over the last decade. The Haneef case only adds to a growing list of things that make me feel shame for my country. We used to be a bastion freethinking liberal rationalism during the 60's and 70's. Now, we're reduced to 51st state status due to Uncle Sam's WAR ON TERROR, which is just about as successful as its war on drugs. Nothing's changed - there's no shortage of scapegoats and all the right pockets are being lined. All for the common good of course.

Russia does not know what democracy is. One of the great social myths that needs to get buried is that life for the non-nobility under the Tsars was any better than under the USSR, or even in the present day.
