My bad. I figured you were paying attention that day. Some banners can be seen by everyone who visits; others, only by those who are logged in. If you've never noticed a difference, then just ignore this.

Edit: Several banners made by others received Users Only ratings for reasons I don’t understand. One of mine that I thought would be considered too offensive for general display is OK for Users And Guests. I guess I don’t understand the criteria used to determine what is offensive and what is appropriate for all.

Well, maybe you know something about your banners that I didn't catch. I particularly liked your Wave.png one, though I don't immediately get how it's necessarily thematic. It's just pretty. I also went through all of them (everybody's), kinda on the fly, not too long ago. For starters, when a banner is uploaded by, say, Taint or myself, it immediately becomes an "R" (Registered only). As examples, these last four of his were done in that fashion, and I changed them all to "B" (Both types). If there's really any mystery as to why something was R or B--or possibly reverted to an N (None)--then feel free to ask.
My general motivation is that most should be visible to all unless I perceive they might cause a problem for the site if seen by the "uninitiated." Let's say some unregistered PETA type doesn't like the pigeon one. I've decided the risk of this is negligible, and that we wouldn't care much if it happened. We were also mildly concerned that if "private" banners became the norm, people would deliberately upload hardcore porn and severed body parts. We have threads for that; it becomes tedious and loses its shock value when it's rife or diluted.

With this wordy post, it's already about as transparent as it can be without cowing to democracy. The fact that I solicit input should be equitable enough (whether it is provided, or of use, are other matters entirely, I 'spose). I'm not opening each and every banner uploaded to a debate. Presently, the ones we still have are suitable for most audiences, with various exceptions, and their owners should understand what they are, because they made them, are adults, and should be cognizant of the various interpretations of a given image and/or phrase. I also don't imagine a cadre of lurking 14 yos from whom all mildly disconcerting or prurient imagery should be hidden. That's their parents' problem.
For the record, I have deleted or undisplayed my own banners, I allow banners to stand which I think are complete shit, but which might have some merit to others, and I think I've whittled down the dead weight enough to keep most of them in rotation (minus the "seasonal" ones and a few I'm just wholly sick of seeing but haven't deleted for the aforementioned "I guess someone else gets a kick out of this sort of thing" reason). Until I'm officially declared "Fierce Ruling Banner Diva of the Ultraworld" I don't really expect my standards to fall into question much. I understood from the beginning that the responsibility wasn't an assertion of my sole will and taste. Were this the case, we'd have less than half as many but no, they would still not all be mine.

That's not happening, primarily because I don't want to have to now redo/resize any of the old crowd pleasers just so they fit these mostly arbitrary dimensions. I already spent several days slogging through the lot to cut out the driftwood. Most banners are within the 700-800 by 200-250 range. I see no reason to make extra work to drop the ones that differ by a mere 50 pixels...unless you wanted to take a transparent compositing ruler to your screen over 300 times.

There are so many banners it's unfair to ask Pale for a hard-and-fast set of criteria. I'm sure many of his decisions depended on how he felt at the time.

Well, yes and no--and everyone should hereby bow down and praise square for the coding on all this digital goodness--but the absence of "rules," especially in a place like HS, is not meant to be a self-serving measure. If I made a rule, it would just get broken, and probably not in an impressive, worth-arguing-about way. I've already outlined how I try to keep things fair. There is some truth to "how I felt at the time," but I also remember that I'm not dealing with dozens of new ones being uploaded by multiple people every day. If and when that happens, then we can revisit the idea of "guidelines."

Well, for starters, I'm on a Mac, which has always been a lot better at font management. I've scooped up a few dozen from free font sites (I don't have to worry about the popups, malware, or viruses normally associated with those), downloaded a handful on P2P, and the rest...let's just say they fell in my lap rather inauspiciously. I also do a lot of manipulation of the fonts as graphics (i.e., more than just the usual filters). You can see the Mac system fonts here, and you can have this site identify a font for you from any existing graphic. If you find something you really want, and I happen to have it, then I will upload it to my site for you.

Yeah, I just dabbled around the margins - O+ (from what I can tell) did most of the heavy lifting.
