Our referrer stats indicate several large sites account for the bulk of our server load, member-only sites that don't honor share and share alike reciprocity.
Probably a dumb idea, but my instinct says, fuck them, shut them out. What do you think?

Fuck em. Fuck the whole internet! The sooner we close the borders on this place the sooner we can start going all Lord of the Flies up in here.

I say let them in, but don't let them partake of media. The ones that only covet will fuck off of their own accord; the ones that lust will come a-knocking bearing gifts. Either way...through exclusion or conversion, you remove the parasites from the bwidth.

How much bandwidth are they really using?
It seems kind of silly to wall people out. Might be fun to toy with them, though... 'twould be easy to vary the site's behavior based on the referrer page...

You're right, not a lot. I'm just looking for trouble and I like this idea.

Fuck that. That behavior offends my moral sense--no joke.

That is good thinking. I agree with it.

I don't know if it would be "easy," being very non-techie...but it might be kind of fun to create customized fuck-off messages.

Suggestion: replace their images with my little pony pics (in homage to our widdle pwincess). Have a rotating stock of a couple dozen MLPs that get sent out instead of whatever they linked.
(Substituting vomit porn or other vile images has been done to death)

HS doesn't host large files. I don't get it. What is the actual bandwidth leakage and what are they accessing? Is DH fucking your cluster?

I like this idea, too. It's parsimoniously bitchy and that's a good thing.

Seconded. along with Wilbur's suggestion to ween out the chaff that insists on a no reach around policy.

You can do it with .htaccess file in the directory where the images are. The dreamhost control panel (goodies -> Htaccess/WebDav) can walk you through the process. add the following to the file (.htaccess) and drop it into the img directory, changing the imagetosendinplace.gif with the name of the image you want served in place of the linked image:
RewriteEngine on
RewriteCond %{HTTP_REFERER} !^$
RewriteCond %{HTTP_REFERER} !^http://(www\.)?high-street.org/.*$ [NC]
RewriteRule \.(gif|jpg)$ https://cruelery.com/imagetosendinplace.gif [R,L]

Haven't people in Detroit suffered enough, just for being in Detroit?

I was thinking a little more subtle, like instead of serving this image:
replace it with this highly-compressed version:
How about something that sends a pointed, yes-we-mean-you message?
For the De-troit crowd, something like an Asian babe driving a rice burning beater and the legend, "Show us yours and we'll show you ours."
