What the fuck were they supposed to do - hold a fucking candlelight vigil?
Just cuz you fuckedup and died doesn't mean I have to change the course of my day...

Clearly, they suspect that the girls didn't think to go for a dip on their own, leaving their wares behind and whatnot. The callous reaction of beachgoers is no surprise, tho.

Half my family is Irish Catholic. We use the presence of corpses as an excuse to get drunk and party down.

Hey, they saved two of them. That's got to count for something.
While 50% isn't a passing grade it's still far better than 0%

I guess the argument could be made that they couldn't be so racist if they saved any of them at all.

You've got white-niggers (not to be confused with wiggers) in Canada?

Granted, most micks went to Ameriky, but some married Scots and ended up in Canada, or jumped north to get away from the only thing worse than the potato famine: prohibition. Visiting my Irish relatives was always a shock - the sheer amount of beating was phenomenal. They beat their wives, they beat their kids, the wives beat back, the kids beat back, and, of course, the kids beat each other. And when the buggers weren't beating each other they were either drinking whiskey, bragging about being "hard men" or writing and reciting awful awful godfucking awful poetry. Just the same...through them I like to think that I'm distantly related to the marvellous Myles na Gopaleen. (And through my German side, I like to think that I'm distantly related to Adolf Hitler. Wait a second...did I just Godwin's Law myself?)

No. If I were that fucking PC, I would have used a Wilber-word like "ethnocentric."

Good point!
All is forgiven then.
I wonder if I could have just sat there watching the rigor mortis set in - I think I might have moved down the beach a little.

Agreed. The racism is suppositional. These are beach-goers, for god's sake. People who hang out in crowds and roast their brains in the sun. The average IQ is probably 10, and the EQ even lower. Given that, they're probably racist as well, but nobody got up and spat on the corpses or drew their favourite fascist symbols in the sand, so we'll never know.

...or maybe the beachgoers just weren't interested in letting a couple stupid little twats who couldn't swim but went into the ocean anyway ruin their vacation time.

Look, I know anti-Gypsy feelings are running high. The news article said that a nearby camp had had to be evacuated, and that shortly afterwards it was set on fire.
The people on the beach probably included a fair number of racists...and probably nobody cared very much about a couple of dead Gyppo beggar-brats. But even if they did, exactly what were they supposed to do about it? Were they maybe supposed to stand around the corpses in a big circle and stare at them? Get in the way of the police? Would that have been more acceptable behavior?
