Freudian ideas are only useful to English majors nowadays anyway.

I love the glib vitriol and scorn with which Freud is discarded.
In general, when someone progenerates an entire discipline, we point to his successes and downplay his misconceptions as the work of a brilliant mind at a formative time. With Freud, however, we scoff and deride, dismissing his genius on the basis of his misconceptions. That's nothing new. People were up in arms when he published his theories, for most of the same supposed reasons. There is something that has always been unpalatable about Freud...perhaps because he was a Jew...perhaps because he saw us as the dishonest, hypocritical, sex-driven neurotics that we actually are.
