From personal experience, I can tell you that the most in-my-face racial prejudice has come from so-called "enlightened liberals"...On the other hand, 11 years ago, I worked for a mortgage brokerage run by a couple of "Promise Keepers"; we got along famously...

You miss the point Lad, the polarization is being encouraged for political gain.  Because when you get down to it they don't have much else to offer. It works better to distract the populace with devisiveness then to be accountable for real soulutions and action.

This applys equally to both parties. Rubes also come equal parts to our big box. The only difference is that the Republicans were able to demostrate its grand success as a primary political strategy in our current political era since the 1980s.

I've never heard it stated better....  I grew up and currently live in a rural America but most of my business dealings are done in urban areas....  I can't believe how many times I've had to listen to the "city folk" describe to me the conditions that I live in and the beliefs that I have.... I'm always amazed at the incredibly skewed impression they have of the upper Midwest....  According to them I have to be a Bible thumping, pickup driving, Republican....  The reality is that I'm an Atheist, Corvette driving, Libertarian and I'm not alone here either...  I will admit that things here are simpler, when I visit the larger cities I notice that low end jobs are occupied by minorities that speak little if no English...  Where I live low end jobs are occupied by sixteen year old blonde girls that need a job to put gas in the new Miata that daddy bought them....  Murder rates are almost non-existent, per capita income is in the top 10% in the U.S., and the cost of living is incredibly low....  A favorite insult thrown out by city dwellers which is both arrogant and condascending is the whole passport insult....  For some reason they are under the impression that no one living outside of the city owns a passport or travels...  I have a passport and have currently visited five different countries in North America, Central America and Europe...  Once again, I'm not special for where I live, the majority of people I know own passports and do travel regularly...  I'm just sick of the diarrhea which is constantly spewing from the mouths of the urban liberal, they tend to be small people with nothing to back up their claims of superiority......

I'm cranky as hell because of family issues and running on 7 hours of sleep over the last two days.  People from the city deride people from the country and vice versa.  People from the US deride people from Canada.  People from Ireland look down on people from Zamibia.  It's just human nature for those of us who haven't either been forced to integrate into other societies or just naturally have a fascination for learning about others.  If you're looking for people who think they're better than you, then just go anywhere in the world besides where you come from and you'll find them with little effort.

Ah yes, but there is hope. My 83-year-old grandmother, always a polite racist (she has tin signs up in her house advertising pickaninny watermelons or some such shit), is proudly declaring her support for Obama these days. She was a blue dog to be sure, and leaned Democrat for years, but still we wondered what the hell she would do in this election. I'm pleased to say that she made the leap and is now living in the gray. All this in good ole corn-growing, ethanol brewing, steel-milling, cow-sheep-pig-farming northern Indiana (can I get a shout-out????).
