After infertility treatments failed, Yvette Maguire and her husband adopted a boy named Ben. Yvette realized she would never be able to love this child and returned him to the agency. Everyone thinks she is a self-centered bitch. Perhaps, but my view is that she suddenly realized that maybe she shouldn’t be a mother and decided to get out of the adoption rather than subject the kid to being raised by a mother who didn’t want him.

A close call for the little boy. I am glad the woman had the sense and the fortitude to back out...but I do wonder what the hell is wrong with her.
If her obsession had really been about having a child, she would never have given the boy back; and if it was the typical acquisitive neurosis of a spoiled yuppie, adoption workers usually sniff that out pretty quickly, which doesn't seem to have been the case here.
Luckily, without the expense of raising a child, she should be able to afford top-notch psychological help.

She should have just kept Ben and he would have been a topic here in two or three years, after the police raid, as a caged, feral child.

More likely she suddenly realized the baby just wasn't the fashion accessory she imagined; I'm quite sure a Paris Hilton style lap dog will make an appearance soon.

While I'm happy she gave the kid back, she was abusive-like all abusers, she worked out her own narcissistic injury on this kid, who she never should have fucking adopted in the first place. For her to even subject this little one to her for two fucking weeks-which represents a huge portion of his lifetime thus far, if you think about it-is selfish.
She should be forbidden from ever adopting again, and maybe there's karma at work anyway-she would be a shitty mom period. I bet she has a history of fucked up ness we don't know about.

That would mean that the social workers that assisted with "nearly two years of a protracted adoption process," didn't thoroughly vet the couple. Typically, there is a period in which the transition is monitored, in case the child presents problems with bonding or the new parent develops post-adoption depression (which is a thing, now).
Yvette's social worker even said that she believed Yvette had post-natal depression, which, extraordinarily, can be diagnosed after adoption as well as natural childbirth.
The article indicates that the adoption wasn't final. So, while it's hard on kids to bound through a lot of foster families, it's typical and this was basically just another foster family for him.
While I agree that the woman may not have thought this through in a rational way, there is a interim between bringing baby home and formalizing for a reason.

An old picture is in several archives including this one [check out my "website"].
If a new one is expected, it may take patience....
