Hate crime laws are stupid. Assault is assault, murder is murder, and rape is rape. Motivation behind the act should be irrelevant when it comes time for sentencing. When you're no longer punishing acts, but punishing motivations, then it's one short step to prosecuting thought/speech crimes.

Not like. Is. Whether we happen to locally consider this a nicety or a bout of political correctness, the idea is definitely to hate the haters. Speaking as someone who's been gaybashed, not exactly lynched, I would like to see the laws less broadly applied than they are, but they should stay. If someone (other than a lover I suppose, but I don't pick up rough trade anymore) were to murder me as a direct result of my being gay, then I would be [dead and] glad for the longer time they spent getting it up the ass in jail on my behalf.

What if it WAS the lover? He wasn't "rough trade" just killed you for backtalking or something. Wouldn't you want him taking it up the as........

They already tried it recently where some guy finally came out in jail to avoid a hatecrime attachment. It failed. They (a bunch of guys) got online to lure some 'mo out into traffic, where he was killed trying to escape their abuse. Think of THAT the next time you use a chatroom to pick up 14 yo girls.
