I miss Ginger Rogers and Fred Astaire, obviously. I met Ginger, in San Francisco many, many years ago when I was a youngster. Nice person.

I like a good Bollywood epic from time to time. The music, the schmaltzy plot, the dancing, the sets - it's just fun. On the other hand, there are some pretty impressive non-Bollywood flicks coming out of India now, and I'm enjoying the hell out of them.
Case in point. I really enjoyed this one, and I'm not big on romance movies.

Hokay, now that's out of the way. Here's how you do that: look at the crap I typed below, and just substitute the bracket thingies, [ and ], every time I typed the pointy thingies < and >, and also take out the underlines.

Early films by Pedro Almodóvar (will need subtitled versions unless fluent in Spanish) made between 1982 and 1987. They are much better than the crap he put out for general audiences after 1987.
Labyrinth of Passions (1982) - a screwball comedy about multiple identities, one of Almodóvar’s favorite subjects. The plot follows the adventures of two sex-crazy characters: Sexilia, an aptly named nymphomaniac, and Riza, the gay son of the leader of a fictional Middle Eastern country, who are meant to be together. The campy roundelay also involves Queti, Sexilia’s “biggest fan,” whose delusional father rapes her.
Dark Habits (1983) - This film has an almost all-female cast featuring many of Almodóvar's favorite leading ladies: Carmen Maura, Julieta Serrano, Marisa Paredes and Chus Lampreave. The narrative centers upon a cabaret singer, who, running away from justice, finds refuge in a convent of destitute nuns, each of whom explores a different sin. The mother superior, a drug addict worse than the fallen woman trying to redeem, falls in love with the singer.
What Have I Done to Deserve This? (1984) – It’s the tale of a struggling housewife and her dysfunctional family: her abusive husband, who works as a taxi driver; her oldest son, a heroin dealer; the youngest son, a hustler; and the grandmother who hates the city and just wants to return to her rural village.
Matador (1986) - Matador is a dark, complex story that centers on the relationship between a former bullfighter and a murderous female lawyer, both of whom can only experience sexual fulfillment in conjunction with killing.
Law of Desire (1987) - The narrative follows three main characters: a gay film director who embarks on a new project; his sister, an actress who used to be his brother (played by Carmen Maura), and a repressed murderously obsessive stalker (played by Antonio Banderas).
Those of you who were traumatized by a Catholic upbringing will love the subtle and blatant blasphemies featured in these films. Almodóvar clearly was expressing his hatred for the Catholic Church and its support of fascism under Franco. The wretched film “Sister Act” was a highly sanitized version of “Dark Habits”, with the lesbianism, drug usage, sarcasm and blasphemy removed. "Matador" is a comedy about two serial killers who meet and fall in love with each other. They resolve to kill each other while making love during a solar eclipse. Antonio Banderas got his start in Almodóvar’s films; he usually played gay roles and appears naked in “Law of Desire”.

Well let's see. I work in a kitchen with a tiny air conditioner which serves as a placebo for actual cool air. The temperature yesterday touched 104º. In the kitchen it was more like 120º. Down sloping air off of the mountains heats up more than you would expect.
Ah, life is good.

After having seen bits of it here and there, finally watched the whole of THX 1138 this weekend. Very much a product of its time; not Lucas's best, but far from his worst. He does have trouble keeping things coherent. One bright spot is Donald Pleasence's performance. We're so used to seeing him as the vaguely evil powerful guy (ala Escape from New York) in futuristic films that it's a surprise to find him playing a different role and doing it well.
If you want to see Robert Duvall in a dystopian fantasy, I'd recommend The Handmaid's Tale as he nails that character. He's merely OK as THX.

Heroic, even, as Flight Lt. Colin Blythe, "The Forger", in The Great Escape.
