It's something the assistant can play with while laying in bed that caters to his (I'm not gonna go bother to check gender on the poor bastard) interests, and he's in a hospital so he can use it to teach magic to sick kids, which is probably a fulfilling use of one's time. I don't think it's a bad gift.
