Interesting possibility, but unlike Pakistan, Mexico has an organic identity that goes back a few centuries. It's not like one of those artificial African states that were hobbled together for the convenience of Europe and where few have a real sense of nation-state identity. Even Pakistan's name is an artificial construction (Punjab, Afghania [North-West Frontier Province], Kashmir, Iran, Sindh [including Kachch and Kathiawar], Tukharistan, Afghanistan and BaluchistaN) and regional and tribal identity is still a much stronger pull on its citizens than the state itself.
I can see Mexico falling into chaos; collapse seems a little more far fetched.

We could solve the problem the Israeli way, move in bit by bit and exterminate or drive out the inhabitants.

Well, hell, even here in the U.S. we have strong tribal affiliations and regional patriotisms, but my experience with Mexicans (which is, admittedly, only outside of Mexico and everyone's a patriot outside their own country) is that their identity as Mexicans is strong. For the majority of Mexicans, I don't believe state or tribal affiliations are stronger than national identity.

I don't where you happened upon that artificial name acronym madness, but Pakistan means "land of the pure" in Urdu. The suffix "stan" in the compound name means "land of" as in all the other examples you mention. And you forgot Waziristan and Tajikistan motherfucker. I'll let you slide on Kafiristan only 'cause that one didn't make it onto today's map.

The project stalled awhile back. We could pick up where we left off.

Where the hell's "Tajikistan motherfucker"? Ted Rall's Silk Road to Ruin doesn't mention it.

Sorry, toots, but I'm correct. As it happens, you are, too and it also means "Land of the Pure" in Farsi, as well.
The name, however, is an acronym chosen because of its meaning. If the acronym had translated into something like "Failing state without a snowball's chance in Hell of surviving longer than a century" it probably wouldn't have been selected.

Ya know, that's what I think about Africa, the entire continent. We should wall that place off for 100 years, let them work out their demographics in the natural manner. When we open it and look inside we'll find they have evolved into Luminous Beings of Pure Thought living in perfect harmony with each other in a civilization who's art and culture surpass anything dreamed of by the paler races.
Of course if we try that in Pakistan, we'll open up to a level plain of glowing green glass.

Captain Fucking Geography is just messing with you, Taint. I'm skeptical about the acronym, do you have a source? For them not to include a W for Waziristan would be a serious slight. Next time you see that quiet little brown fellow in your IT department whose name is Waziri (or Wasiri), buy him a beer on Lechero, would ya?
Kafiristan incidentally means "land of the infidels," which probably explains why it's not around anymore.
The title of this thread is so killer it almost makes me feel bad about sidetracking it.

Mexigenuity will outlast us all, those guys don't even have a government now anyway. They're nothing if not hardscrabble, tough as nails survivors, we aren't qualified to shine their shoes in that department.
And Fnord, the barely contained excitement in your extermination fantasies is a bit disturbing, and by the way, did you see Gran Torino?

According to my Pakistani immigrant employee (the gay guy of course), it originated as an acronym; the work Pak for "pure" did not exist in this sense before the nation was created.
Obiviously as a native his knowledge on the subject doesn't really grant much more credence on the issue.

I don’t plan to see it. I found the plot summary to be a complete turnoff.

That would be at San Jacinto.
