Damn you YouTube!  Some songs aren't as obviously gay until you see them performed.

He made such a big deal of it that I began to have my doubts...

Just how stoned were you during the 70’s?  This song screamed gay from the first time I heard it.

I 'm assuming that any Queen or Judas Priest song that refers to a relationship is gay. I guess you can't take "Fat Bottomed Girls" too literally. Also, for all of the Rush fans out there, why do they always sing about guys? "Working Man", "Tom Sawyer", "Digital Man", "New World Man" are just a few of the more obvious titles. I can't recall a single Rush song singing about the vag'. Don't get me wrong, I love the band. However, I went to their concert last year and it dawned on me that all they sing about is the fellers.

Right. Like I'm the only one.

What's with the whiplash sound over "war" and "nuclear war"?  Did they decide that was too politically incorrect or something?

Yeah but when I was a kid I didn't know that.  There are no fags in the Bible Belt.

Not a song; Whitman's poetry.

Oh, c'mon. For the era, he really wasn't couching too much in metaphor. But what should I know? I used to think "Song of Myself" was about masturbation or sex of some kind: A few light kisses, a few embraces, a reaching around of arms...

The great things about songs and other poetry is that the good ones always reflect what the listener feels instead of creating their own overt reality.

In high school when I'd meet a certain friend in the hallway, the first one to notice would yell out, "Take a walk" and the other would respond "on the wild side". It was only decades later when "classic rock" stations played it as an oldie that I actually listened to the lyrics. Now I have to wonder if that guy was as clueless as I was or did he want to date me. I'm sure he's wondered the same about me. As for my love of The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders From Mars, all I can say is that subconsciously I must not have been homophobic.

In the 70s a guy got more trim if he was (or pretended to be) sexually "open" and/or bisexual.  Chicks dug it.  Then AIDS came along and that idea went the way of the giant gold zodiac medallion.
