The velocity of a 22lr round going off when not in a barrel will generally be below 200 ft/sec. And it's one of the most deadly bullets when not in a gun. Most larger bullets will just push the bullet out and the powder doesn't explode if there isn't any pressure buildup in the chamber, but a 22lr has a stronger cartridge sidewall and a tighter crimp, so it comes out quickly.
He should be lucky the hammer didn't come back up off the anvil and smack him between the eyes.
