It met the strategic goal - to halt the spread of communism in SE Asia.  Strategically and Tatically it was a complete success, casulties were far lower than anticipated also.

What did you think we were trying to do - go to war with China again?

I thought we were trying to lock down that big oil field off of French Indochina and kill off all the young, poor men while funneling billions of dollars into the pockets of large corporations.

Also, Vietnam and Laos are still technically Communist, though in recent years they've reformed themselves more towards capitalism, once more proving that Communism was never any kind of threat.
