I used to love the DC Cover teasers to get you to buy them and then you'd just find out that it was a trick or it was the Red Kriptonite making him act that way or he was just "fooling" to trick the bad guy.
I even remember Batman shooting a Machine Gun on a cover. "Yes Commissioner, the 'Hour of the Gun' has come!"

They're all pretty snarky/sinister. As Baywolfe already explained, the majority of them were empty teases, ruses with some deus-ex-machina flair. Nonetheless, one wonders how they managed to sell so many comics on the premise that Superman was being a complete douchebag to everyone he knew.
